Macular degeneration and your vision

Macular degeneration is an eye disease that affects the sensitive macula of your eye – the center of the retina that allows you to see fine details. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of central vision loss. It is also a common cause of vision loss in people over 40 years of age. When left untreated, AMD can cause permanent loss of eyesight.

Facts About AMD

  • Associated with aging
  • Affects only central vision
  • More common in light-colored eyes
  • Early diagnosis is critical to slowing progression
  • Vitamins/minerals may also slow progression
  • Exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) may increase risks
  • An Amsler Grid Test can help detect AMD
